Why are not all cars now automatic? Once the technology was there, why did the gear stick not go the way of the starting handle? Until recently automatic gearboxes were restricted to three forward gears and so one had to choose between manual with five gears and economy or automatic with none. There was a huge difference in the position of the rev counter which was spelling out the wastage of petrol. Automatic gearboxes are more expensive, probably more prone to reliability problems and are less efficient in transmitting power from the engine to the wheels, hence the dominance of the manual gear stick in performance cars. When an automatic gearbox can predict what gear to select from the road conditions it sees ahead and it returns a better MPG than a manual, then the manual will be obsolete. The starting handle became obsolete because it costs money to produce and what manufacturer is going to admit their cars are likely not to start? Hand cranking a modern high compression engine would also be somewhat difficult. I drive up to a thousand miles a week across northern Europe and mostly in the UK. I have been driving for almost thirty years and I choose an automatic car every time. V12 and there is no way any of you can convince me that you have more fun in a manual car. Grand Prix in their stupid shiny jackets. I worked in the US recently for eighteen months and for the first time in my life, drove an automatic. I have driven stick shifts in the UK for 35 years. For the average driver, what is the point in messing about with a clutch and gear lever ? And you can have cruise control too with an automatic. As point of note I have been driving for 35 years and have owned a varied selection of manual and automatic cars. Automatics work very nicely on bitumen but they do not cope well on deeply rutted, muddy or dusty, highly irregular surfaces such as we can find quite close to home here in Melbourne. We now drive two automatics, and they do wonders for our driving habits. It is largely a case of regional preference. In Europe, where petrol is expensive this may have given sufficient reason for drivers to stick with a manual gear change. In the USA in contrast, petrol is cheap and the automatic option is almost universally prefered. No, correct that, the left hand is needed to signal to other motorists your displeasure at their not signalling. Until such times as a car is developed that can look ahead and anticipate the gear that WILL be needed in a few moments a stick shift will always be more efficient. I have driven many automatics and owned one once, a distinctly unsatisfying experience. That said if I was driving a truck bus or a London cab all day automatic would be the only option. Why are not all cars now automatic? To find the perfect solution for you, I would recommend you to arrange a consultation with an insurance expert to help you find the best insurance for you and your individual needs. What is the difference between public and private health insurance in Germany? I want to change my public health insurance to private. Contact a suicide hotline if you need someone to talk to. If you have a friend in need of help, please encourage that person to contact a suicide hotline as well. I want to change my public health insurance to private is this is right for me? For me, a manual connects me to the engineering, is fun to operate and keeps me alert. I enjoy being able to drive anything pretty much. Do you want to miss all the fun? How come people still drive manual cars when automatics exist? Drove solo across Australia in a manual Toyota landy. Do people still drive manual transmission cars? Are there people that can drive a manual but not an automatic? Are people who drive manual cars better drivers than people who drive automatic? When you are used to drive manual cars, is it easy to drive automatic cars? Can an automatic driver use a manual transmission? Because many of us actually prefer them. I have nothing against automatics . Are most cars in Europe still manual? How long does it take to comfortably drive a manual transmission vehicle? Why do people still buy manual transmissions when automatics are cheaper, more efficient, and faster to drive in most cases? Why do many people still insist on driving manual cars? I drove some manuals and some automatics and I found next to nothing to prefer in manuals. Can I drive an automatic with a manual license? What percentage of cars in America are manuals rather than automatics? Why do people buy cars with manual transmissions when they can get automatics that shift faster and more smoothly? Are manual transmission cars harder to drive than automatic transmission cars? Why do some countries still use manual driving cars ? Likewise, drivers in Europe and other countries around the world might not realize that Americans mostly steer clear of manual transmission vehicles until they rent a car in the US and discover that, in most cases, only automatics are filexlib.
